2009: International Year of Astronomy – Ano Internacional da Astronomia

Ano internacional da Astronomia 2009 – Brasil
http:// www.astronomia2009.org.br/

Descobre o teu Universo!

International Year of Astronomy 2009
http:// www.astronomy2009.org/
IYA2009 will promote and facilitate the creation of international networks to foster a global appreciation of the role and value of science and astronomy as a unifying activity for humanity. IYA2009 will start up, connect and support networks of professional and amateur astronomers, educators and astrophysicists from all over the world, so that all these valuable sources of knowledge can be shared. The networks of hundreds, if not thousands of astronomical organisations, nationally and internationally, will be one of the legacies of IYA2009 that will last far beyond the year 2009. The activities of IYA2009 will largely take place at the national level: after only nine months, a significant global network has already been created. This network has reached 132 countries and a total of 140 are eventually expected to join, making it possible to reach out to 97% of the world’s population.

International Year of Astronomy 2009 – AU
http:// www.astronomy2009.org.au/
In 2009 it will be 400 years since the Italian scientist Galileo Galilei turned a telescope the heavens. The International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009), a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, marks this event. With the theme of “The Universe, Yours to Discover”, IYA will help reconnect people with the night sky, the common heritage of humanity. IYA2009 is an initiative of the International Astronomical Union, the body that represents professional astronomers worldwide, and UNESCO, the educational and cultural arm of the United Nations. IYA2009 activities will take place locally, regionally and nationally.

International Year of Astronomy 2009 – UK
http:// www.astronomy2009.co.uk/
In 2009 the world will celebrate the International Year of Astronomy to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Galileo's use of a telescope to study the night sky. 2009 is also the anniversary of many other important dates in the history of science, such as the publishing of Kepler's Astronomia Nova, Huygens' Systema Saturnium, and the first moon landing.

International Year of Astronomy 2009 – USA
http:// astronomy2009.us/home/
In the year 2009, the world will celebrate the International Year of Astronomy as it commemorates the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s use of a telescope to study the skies, and Kepler’s publication of Astronomia Nova. 2009 is also the anniversary of many other historic events in science, including Huygen’s 1659 publication of Systema Saturnium.

Astronomy and World Heritage Initiative
http:// whc.unesco.org/en/activities/19
As there are few properties related to science on the World Heritage List, and the scientific value of cultural properties related to astronomy is not always recognized, the World Heritage Centre, in close collaboration with the State Parties and ICOMOS, have developed the thematic initiative "Astronomy and World Heritage" in response to the ever-growing concept of World Heritage, and the Global Strategy for a Balanced, Representative and Credible World Heritage List adopted by the World Heritage Committee in 1994.

ASP - Astronomical Society of the Pacific
http:// www.astrosociety.org/index.html
The Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) was founded in 1889 by a group of Northern California professional and amateur astronomers after joining together to view a rare total solar eclipse. The ASP's earliest purpose was to disseminate astronomical information -- a mission which has flourished with astronomers' inexhaustible exploration of the universe. The ASP has become the largest general astronomy society in the world, with members from over 70 nations. The ASP Board of Directors and the Advisory Council are comprised of members of the astronomical, educational, and amateur communities.

IAU - International Astronomical Union
http:// www.iau.org/
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) was founded in 1919. Its mission is to promote and safeguard the science of astronomy in all its aspects through international cooperation. Its individual members - structured in Divisions, Commissions, Working groups and Program Groups - are professional astronomers from all over the world, at the Ph.D. level and beyond, and active in professional research and education in astronomy. Besides, the IAU collaborates with various organizations all over the world. The IAU has 9613 Individual Members in 86 countries worldwide. Of those 65 are National Members.

Celestia
http://www.shatters.net/celestia/
The free space simulation that lets you explore our universe in three dimensions. Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy.

Stellarium
http://www.stellarium.org./
Stellarium is a free open source planetarium for your computer. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope.
It is being used in planetarium projectors. Just set your coordinates and go.

WorldWide Telescope

“Yesterday when I was in bed, enjoying the breeze, looking at the stars in the clear blue sky... I was wondering, "WHERE IS THE CEILING????" This is the statement written by a student in one of my projects. Yes it is true ! Studying the Space is not a month's job. Here it is only an attempt to make the students get interested in the field of Astronomy, learn about Space and gain the confidence that their knowledge in this field is upgraded to certain level through this one month journey. This Project aims at learning the basic things about the Space and some achievements in Astronomy by humans.

http:// www.thinkquest.org/pls/html/think.go?c=307258037
This project aims at increasing awareness about BLACK HOLES which has been an object of mistery ever since the advant of telescope. The Black hole has a very strong rotating magnetic field. Its gravitational field is so strong that it even does not emit light.
Then, how the black hole creates the jets of accelerated matter that is emitted from the polar regions. How is it that this matter or energy escapes the event horizon?
